In addition to being an author, I’m also a playwright! My debut children’s book, The Thing That Comes to the Basement, was previously a play, and before that, a book I wrote when I was 8-years-old! Huh?!?! Here’s the breakdown. A few years ago, my mom was going through things from my childhood and she came across this adorable book I wrote when I was 8-years-old. It was called, The Thing That Comes to the Basement. She thought it was really good, as mom’s usually do, and told me I should do something with it. I was pretty skeptical. But, I figured I’d indulge her and read it again. She was right, per usual, lol.
In 2023 I rewrote it into a children’s play, submitted it to a contest, and it was selected! After that, I decided to rewrite it once again, and make it the debut book for my publishing house. Below are blurbs of my children’s plays, all of which were produced by Ghostlight Ensemble as part of its Make/Believe short play festival.
Asherella- A take on Cinderella where the heroines are African-American females and the person rescued is a young white male. Asher lives at home with his cruel stepmother and cruel stepbrothers. With the help of The One, an African-American magical being who is the source of all black girl magic, Asher is able to escape his cruel stepmother and stepbrothers and live in the castle with the ruler of the Queendom.
Splash of Magic- This play teaches boys and girls to overcome their fears by believing in themselves. Diane is an 8-year-old African-American girl who is scared to go in the pool without something to keep her afloat. When she discovers her black girl magic, she realizes she can conquer any fear as long as she believes in the magic that lives inside her.
The Thing That Comes to the Basement- A rewrite of the original book authored by 8-year-old me, this play teaches children that they can have friends that do not look like them and that are from different backgrounds. Camilla Antie is an 8-year-old ant who discovers that just because someone looks differently than you does not mean they are frightening or that they cannot be your friend.
